Young people need honesty, humour, and deep respect for the existential questions and challenges that can accompany their journey through adolescence.

Youth Counselling Services

A calm, relational approach that meets young people where they are. True change is possible.

The Havenwood Counselling Approach

At Havenwood Counselling, work with children and youth is relational, experiential, and developmentally attuned. The focus is not on fixing behaviour or pushing insight, but on creating the conditions for young people to feel safe, understand themselves more deeply, and grow.

I work from the understanding that children and adolescents communicate through emotion, relationship, action, and image—not only through words.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Safety and relationship come first: Change begins with trust. Early sessions focus on building a warm, respectful relationship where youth feel seen rather than analyzed. Humour, honesty, and genuine curiosity help young people relax and show up as themselves.

Experiential, not talk-heavy: Young people don't always need—or want—to explain everything through words. Experiential work allows us to follow emotions, reactions, beliefs, and patterns as they emerge in the moment. Drawing, journaling, creative work, movement, or hands-on activities may also offer other ways to explore and express what is happening.

Emotion-focused and neuroscience-informed: The approach is informed by contemporary trauma, attachment, and neuroscience research. Rather than managing symptoms alone, the work helps youth recognize, understand, and transform emotional patterns underlying anxiety, shutdown, reactivity, or low mood.

Respect for autonomy and pacing: Youth are never pushed to disclose more than they want to. The work unfolds at their pace, supporting agency and inner confidence—particularly important as adolescents develop identity and independence.

Family-aware, child-centred: Parents and caregivers are involved when helpful, while protecting the young person's sense of safety and privacy. The goal is greater understanding and connection, not blame.

Experiential Clinical Counselling

Trauma - informed, experiential sessions to build an authentic, trustworthy relationship.

We gently explore symptoms to shift the emotional & behavioural patterns that are overwhelming, distressing or unwanted.

These therapy sessions utilize a blend of experiential modalities (AEDP & ACT) to support healing.

Creative Arts Clinical Counselling

Sessions may include art journalling, drawing, collage, watercolour, clay, or other mixed-media approaches—all with the aim of helping young people express difficult experiences and process emotions symbolically, while also benefiting from the naturally calming and regulating qualities of art-making.

Symbols and images speak to a the non verbal, limbic part our brains, and can facilitate the healing process.

Fibre Arts Clinical Counselling

In Fibre Arts–Informed Therapy, sessions begin with structured fibre arts instruction, such as knitting, crochet, or embroidery.

As a calm, focused state develops, verbal reflection and emotional processing can occur more easily and organically.

Youth must be individually motivated and have an intrinsic desire to learn fibre arts skills to qualify for these sessions.
